Zinc oxide is widely recognized for its protective effects against sun-induced damage with a highly regarded safety profile. The protective properties of zinc oxide are attributed to its broad filtering of the ultraviolet (UV) light spectrum, protecting the skin from both UVA and UVB radiation. This protects the skin from the carcinogenic and skin-damaging consequences of prolonged sun exposure. Zinc oxide provides greater spectrum protection against ultraviolet (UV) exposure superior to titanium oxide.

Octyl methoxycinnamate (Cctinoxate) is the most commonly used organic UVB filter in sunscreens and cosmetics. Topical application is generally well tolerated, with little to no skin irritation, allergic reaction, or phototoxic effects. A concern with sunscreen use is the absorption and potential for toxicity with regular use. Octinoxate, however, has been tested in clinical human trials with epidermal levels too low to cause any significant toxicity to the underlying human keratinocytes. Additional studies have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of Octinoxate to safely protect the skin from UV rays.

Oxybenzone protects the skin from the sun's harmful effects. It mainly absorbs UVB radiation, which is responsible for sunburn and increases the risk of developing skin cancer. It absorbs a smaller amount of short UVA rays, which are mainly responsible for skin aging.
